Fax prior authorization resolution now underway
In 2026, CareFirst experienced a significant increase in prior authorization requests submitted by fax, resulting in longer than normal processing times. Over the past week, we’ve cleared a large volume of faxed prior authorization requests received before April 19, 2026.
To ensure notifications of decisions, impacted providers will receive decision letters sent outside of the prior authorization system.
- Letters are mailed to the address listed on the fax request form
- Letters include the decision, approved codes and relevant dates of service
Going forward, authorization decision information will appear in the prior authorization system as usual.
