MD House Bill Expands In Vitro Fertilization Benefits for Opposite Sex Married Couples
  • Maryland House Bill 11/Senate Bill 1 expanded the application of in vitro fertilization (IVF) benefits to include opposite sex married couples.
  • According to the legislation, effective July 1, 2016, for patients of the opposite sex, the patient's eggs must be fertilized with the spouse's sperm unless:
    • the spouse is unable to produce and deliver functional sperm, and
    • the inability to produce and deliver sperm was not the result of a vasectomy or another method of voluntary sterilization
  • Please follow your normal process when submitting your pre-authorization request for IVF services.
  • The revised coverage information is currently being updated in our online Medical Policy Reference Manual. Details will be available online by early August.
  • Visit www.carefirst.com/medicalpolicy and enter 'IVF' in the search tool bar to view the updated details.
