Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Authorizations

January 06, 2015 - Some CareFirst contracts now include a benefit for applied behavioral health analysis (ABA) services. Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) is a treatment for autism and autism spectrum disorders.

Effective Jan. 2, 2015, services for all ABA services will require pre-authorization. Please contact Magellan HealthCare Inc. at (800) 245-7013 for a pre-authorization request.

State law does not require that ABA be covered in all contracts; therefore, you will need to contact the appropriate provider service department to verify the member’s benefits. Applied Behavior Analysis services should be reported using Category III CPT® codes for adaptive behavior therapy.
