Multi-Factor Authentication: Another layer of security when accessing the Provider Portal (iCentric/CareFirst Direct)

For your protection, enhanced online security is coming to your online CareFirst Provider Portal account—and we want you to know what to expect.

Next week, when you login to the Provider Portal (CareFirst Direct/iCentric), you will be prompted to set-up an additional layer of security to your account.

This additional layer is called multi-factor authentication (MFA) and it validates a user’s identity by requiring more than one method of authentication (multi-factor) to verify the user.

For providers who attempt to log in for the first time or log in using a new device (like a mobile phone, etc.), you can expect to:

  1. Receive a unique, one-time code via email or text message at the number CareFirst has on file.
  2. Be required to enter that code – in addition to your username and password – to complete the login process.

Other circumstances where you may be required to retrieve and enter an authentication code include:

  • When you login using a device that has not accessed the Provider Portal for more than 6 months.
  • If you delete the cookies or cache on your device.
  • If you use a new/alternate browser on your device.
